Azucar Moreno was formed in January of 2005 by Janice Woodward and Kimberley Yates, and made their debut at the Tribute to Women In Salsa in March 2005. In the summer of 2005, Liz Pilatuna joined the group. Kim, Janice and Liz are all avid salsa dancers and enjoy both social dancing and performing. The members of Azucar Moreno have quite a bit of dancing experience in several other groups, including Melao Dance Company, Son Mulato Dance Company, Salsumba and the ClaveKazi Student Group.
The ladies wished to further their knowledge of choreography and performing and appreciated each other's style and approach to dancing. Though they have only been together a short time, Azucar Moreno has become a very close-knit family. In addition to their own performances, the ladies of Azucar Moreno sometimes perform with their sister group, Melao Dance Company. Our family expanded when Sheila McNeil became an honorary member in April 2006, and again in the spring of 2007 when Christian Evans and Manny Andrade joined the group. We are thrilled to have these two as AM members!
